Disappearing threads

Hi - a thread I made recently disappeared in the Character Cafe forum, as well as a thread I commented in in Fantasy. Not that it bothers me, but if a thread is redundant or otherwise inappropriate, doesn't it get locked instead of disappearing without notice? I'm a tad confused.
